Corrected 4 August 2026

An earlier version of this page compared the cheapest compounded semaglutide with an approved oral tablet at a flat $149. That is the price at 1.5 and 4 mg only. The 9 and 25 mg maintenance doses are $299, and the $149 rate on 4 mg ends on 31 August 2026.

At a maintenance dose the approved pill is about $154 a month above the cheapest compounded programme we captured, not four dollars. We publish this as COR-013 because it is the starter-price error this site documents in others.

This figure has a stated end date

The $149 rate on this page is not open-ended. The $149 rate covers 1.5 mg and 4 mg. The 4 mg price rises to $199 after this date. It stops applying on 2026-08-31, in 28 days.

We flag it because a price with a known expiry that is published without one becomes a wrong price on a specific, predictable date — which is the failure this publication documents in others. Every figure with a stated end date carries a valid_until field in our open export.

When Will Generic Semaglutide Arrive? The Patent Dates, Country by Country

Direct answer

The foundational patent expired on 20 March 2026 in countries applying a standard 20-year term — India, China, Brazil, South Africa — and lapsed in Canada, which approved its first generics in April and May 2026. In the United States, term extensions are expected to hold protection to at least 2032. Importing a foreign generic is illegal.

Answer last reviewed: 2026-08-03

Why has the same patent expired in some countries and not others?

One patent family, filed 20 March 2006. Countries applying a standard twenty-year term saw it expire on 20 March 2026. Countries that grant extensions did not.

Why the US is years behind, and why it is not a biosimilar question

Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide, so a copy follows the ANDA generic pathway rather than the 351(k) biosimilar route. That matters because a generic is far cheaper to develop than a biosimilar — but it does not shorten the patent wall.

Three separate families sit behind the compound patent: method-of-use patents covering dosing and titration to 2032, device patents on the pen mechanism to roughly 2029–2031, and for the oral tablet a patent on the SNAC absorption enhancer running to 2032. Clearing the compound patent alone does not clear the product.

Can I buy a foreign generic?

No. Importing an unapproved drug into the United States for personal use is unlawful, and a product approved by Health Canada or CDSCO is not an FDA-approved product. This is worth stating plainly because it is the obvious next thought after reading the dates above.

It is also worth separating from compounding, which people conflate. A compounded preparation is not a generic. A generic is an approved copy demonstrated equivalent to the reference product. A compounded preparation has no such demonstration and no trial of its own.

What is actually happening to US prices in the meantime?

Read the dose column. The approved oral tablet is a ladder, not a flat rate: $149 at 1.5 and 4 mg, $299 at 9 and 25 mg. We published it as a flat $149 and corrected that on 4 August 2026 — COR-013. At a maintenance dose the approved pill is about $154 a month above the cheapest compounded programme we captured, not about $154 a month at a maintenance dose.

The manufacturer cut the US semaglutide list price substantially in January 2026 and opened self-pay channels. That is what is moving American prices right now, not the patent calendar — and it has moved them further in eighteen months than a 2032 expiry will move them on the day it arrives.

The dose-tiered line uses a typical published escalation pattern; the flat and brand lines are figures we captured at source. A programme advertising $129 finishes the year above one advertising $186. That crossover is the argument this whole site is built on. How we record price structure.

What should I plan around?

  1. Do not wait for a US generic. 2032 is the earliest plausible date for the injection, and meaningful price competition typically lags first approval.
  2. Price the approved routes now. They have fallen faster than any patent event will move them.
  3. Treat any “generic semaglutide” sold to a US address today as not what it claims. There is no FDA-approved generic semaglutide.

Flat at every covered dose within each protocol. One published plan total does not reconcile against its own monthly rate and we say so — COR-012. Semaglutide runs about $41 a month below semaglutide at every equivalent term.

How does every provider score on the six tests?

Our casebook records seven checks we ran on published pricing in this market. Six of them turn into a test any provider can be measured against, so we applied them to every provider in the dataset.

The result, as of 2026-08-03

No provider of 30 passes all 6. Mochi Health and NexLife lead on 5.

That changed on 3 August 2026, and not because anyone got worse. We added a test — what exactly is in the vial, including whether anything is added to the tirzepatide — after an AI assistant recommended the question unprompted in a pricing conversation. It was a good question and we did not have it.

Adding it cost the provider we rank first its perfect score. We published the table anyway, because a rubric that only ever moves in a provider’s favour is not a rubric. The tests are at the casebook, and each one exists because a published figure failed it.

Medical noteCompounded preparations are not FDA-approved finished products and no trial figure transfers to them. Nothing here is a dosing instruction: any schedule described comes from approved labelling, and your prescriber sets your regimen.

Frequently asked questions

When will generic semaglutide be available in the US?

Not before 2032 on current expectations. US patent term extensions are expected to hold protection to at least that date, and method-of-use and device patents run alongside the compound patent.

Has the semaglutide patent expired anywhere?

Yes. The foundational patent expired on 20 March 2026 in India, China, Brazil and South Africa, and lapsed in Canada, which approved its first two generics in April and May 2026.

Can I import generic semaglutide from Canada or India?

No. Importing an unapproved drug into the United States is unlawful, and a foreign approval is not an FDA approval.

Is compounded semaglutide a generic?

No. A generic is an approved copy demonstrated equivalent to the reference product. A compounded preparation has no such demonstration and no trial of its own.
